2026 Whale Season in Queensland – All You Need To Know

Planning on visiting during the 2026 whale season in Queensland? Here’s all you need to know.

Whale season runs from July 12 – October 31, 2026, with the Spirit of Hervey Bay offering the best encounters. Peak season is August-September with inquisitive juvenile whales and when mothers arrive with their calves – trust us, it’s a show you’ll never forget. Plus, we guarantee whale sightings during season or your next trip is free.

What You Can Expect During Whale Season in Hervey Bay

Here’s what you can expect each month throughout the season:

July 2026 (From July 12)

You’ll see: This month is when the sub adults (teenagers if you will) enter the bay. They are very curious and will often display mugging actions, meaning they come really close to the boat for a look at you. Although fewer in number, the whales will be very active, and these early arrivals will display impressive breaching and tail slaps.

The weather: You’ll experience cooler mornings (12-18°C).

Pro tips: There will be fewer crowds with the peak appearing as whale numbers increase later in the season.

August 2026

You’ll see: Whale numbers will build rapidly with more juvenile whales entering the bay. These whales are very curious with muggings and close encounters at a premium during this month. The first mothers and newborn calves may also start appearing towards the end of August, and, you might even see baby whales learning to breach!

The weather: Morning temperatures will sit around 14-20°C.

Pro tips: With school holidays and peak season approaching, it is best to book early to secure your spot.

September 2026

You’ll see: September is a great time for whale watching in Hervey Bay. The pristine waters will be teeming with whales, mothers nursing calves, playful juveniles, and magical mugging encounters.

The weather: It will be getting warmer (16-22°C).

Pro tips: This is peak season, so make sure you book early to avoid missing out.

October 2026 (Until October 31)

You’ll see: The final stragglers will be heading south with spectacular farewell shows. You’ll see mothers giving their calves final lessons, and adult males fighting and vying for the affections of the female whales.

The weather: Temps will be quite mild (18-25°C).

Pro tips: There are fewer crowds as the season draws to a close so it’s a good time to get in before the season’s over.

Why Hervey Bay vs Other Queensland Whale Watching

Here’s what makes us special: everywhere else along Queensland’s coast, whales are just passing through. (See ya, Gold Coast! Bye, Sunshine Coast!) But in Hervey Bay? They stop for up to 10 days. That’s right – our whales settle in, relax, and interact.

This is because the sheltered waters of Platypus Bay, protected by K’gari (Fraser Island), create a natural haven for our whale friends. This means calmer waters, longer encounters, curious whales, and more playful behaviours.

It’s why Hervey Bay became the world’s first Whale Heritage Site in 2019.

What to Expect During Your Tour

Picture this: A 40-tonne humpback whale breaches metres from your viewing deck. See it for yourself in our gallery — our passengers’ photos say it better than we ever could! Minutes later, the calf tests out its own breach. Through the underwater viewing windows, you watch these massive creatures glide beneath the boat.

You’ll see breaching, tail slapping, spy-hopping, pectoral fin slapping, and mugging – when curious whales approach and linger for over 20 minutes.

One guest recently shared, “The staff made sure I was comfortable and could see the whales. Best day I have had out in years.”
