When is whale watching season in Hervey Bay?

Hervey Bay’s whale season runs from July to October, right in the middle of the humpback migration. This is one of the only places in the world where the whales stop and stay—making for unforgettable, up-close encounters.

What time of day is best for whale watching?

Both morning and afternoon cruises offer incredible whale sightings. Mornings are generally calmer on the water and ideal for photographers. Afternoons can be a little warmer and relaxed, perfect if you want to soak in the sun and end your day on a high.

Is whale watching safe?

Absolutely. The Spirit of Hervey Bay is a large, stable, custom-built catamaran designed for comfort and safety. We stay in the sheltered waters of Platypus Bay and follow all responsible whale watching guidelines.

How close will we get to the whales?

While we always respect whale approach regulations, the magic of Hervey Bay is that the whales often come to us! It’s not uncommon to have them swim right up to the boat.

How far out do whale watching boats go?

We cruise into Platypus Bay, near K’gari (Fraser Island). It’s sheltered and shallow, so we’re never too far from shore—but it feels like another world.

What weather conditions are best for whale watching?

Calm, sunny days are ideal—but we cruise in most weather, except extreme wind or rain. Even overcast days can be fantastic for sightings. Our large vessel means a smoother ride in varying conditions.

An unforgettable birthday experience with Spirit of Hervey Bay We took our three grandsons, aged 6–8, on the morning whale-watching trip with Spirit of Hervey Bay mid Aug as a special birthday experience—two of them are twins—and we couldn’t have chosen a better way to celebrate their birthdays. We saw countless whales, a beautiful rainbow, and enjoyed fantastic commentary from the skipper throughout the morning. The whole crew were friendly, professional, and welcoming. But when the boys talk about their day, the person they talk about most is Patrick. Patrick was absolutely wonderful with our three very curious boys. He seemed to attract them like magnets! They followed him around the boat, asking question after question, and he patiently answered every single one. He took the time to show them things, involve them in what was happening, and keep a watchful eye on their safety. He went so far above and beyond what we expected. What struck us most was that he didn’t seem to be making a special effort or putting on a performance for the children. He was simply naturally warm, patient, attentive, and genuinely interested in them. It gave us the impression that this is just how Patrick treats every passenger. For three boys celebrating their birthdays, having someone like Patrick take such an interest in them made the experience incredibly special. The whales were spectacular, but Patrick is what they will remember most. Thank you to Patrick and the entire Spirit of Hervey Bay team for giving our grandsons such a wonderful birthday memory. We had the most fantastic morning and would wholeheartedly recommend this experience to families—especially if you have curious kids who want to know absolutely EVERYTHING! Patrick, you were a standout. Thank you for helping make their birthday one they won’t forget.
